PRACTICAL DRIVING TEST QUESTIONS (B kategory)

1. Show or tell how to lock and unlock the steering wheel lock.

To activate the steering lock, you must turn off the engine and remove the key from the ignition. Then turn the steering wheel to the left or right until you hear a click, after which the steering wheel becomes stationary. To unlock the lock, insert the key into the ignition switch and while lightly moving the steering wheel left and right, turn the key at the same time – the steering lock should unlock. In cars without a key, the system unlocks the lock automatically: just press the start button and press the clutch pedal at the same time – the steering wheel will unlock and the engine will start.

2. Tell me how you will check whether the oil level in the engine is sufficient.

The oil level in the vehicle can be checked when the car is parked on a flat road surface and the engine has cooled down. First, the dipstick is pulled out, the oil is cleaned, and it is put back in again. After that, when it is pulled out again, it is checked whether the oil level is between the MAX and MIN marks. There may be indicators on the dashboard, control lights, computer information, with the help of which the driver receives information about the oil level in the engine.

3. Show or tell how you would check to see if the power steering is working.

When the engine is off, the steering wheel is hard to control. However, after starting the engine, the steering wheel should be easy to control. If the steering is still hard to control, it indicates that the power steering is faulty or missing. A malfunctioning power steering can be indicated by a lit symbol on the dashboard.

4. Show how to turn on the rear window heating.

Rear window heating is activated by pressing the dedicated button. It depicts a rectangular window with upward wavy arrows symbolizing air currents. It is important not to confuse this button with the windshield defroster button.

5. Tell me how you will check if the coolant level is sufficient.

The level of the engine cooling system is checked under the hood by inspection. The coolant expansion tank is transparent when visible. The coolant must be within the limits of the MAX-MIN marks. The liquid can be different colors: yellow pink, green, purple or blue. If the car is a hybrid, there may be two expansion tanks: one for the internal combustion engine, the other for the electric motor-inverter.

6. Tell me how you will check if the parking brake is working.

When the switch is turned on or the parking brake lever is raised, the car will move hard due to strong resistance, or the rear of the car will go down. If the parking brake is mechanical, raise the brake lever until you hear 3-4 clicks. If the brake is electronic, it is enough to lift or press the brake switch. The operation of the parking brake can be checked in another way: after stopping on a hill or downhill, switch the gear to neutral and activate the parking brake. After releasing the service brake pedal, the car must not roll.

7. Tell me where you will pour the window washer fluid.

The window washer fluid reservoir is located under the hood, but is sometimes not visible. It is easy to find because of its bright blue cap with the symbol of a window with a jet of water on it. However, in some models, the caps may be available in other colors, such as black, white or yellow. If the tank is visible, the liquid level can be directly inspected visually.

8. Tell how you will check whether the front and rear (if equipped) window washer system is working.

The window washer lever is located on the right side of the steering wheel. If the system is working, when you pull the lever towards you, you will hear the sound of the motor and the window washer fluid will start to flow onto the window. The rear window washer function is also controlled by the same lever, in a different position. Spraying modes can be several: intermittent, continuous slow and continuous fast.

9. Show or tell how you will check if the warning sounder is working.

You press the place marked with the horn symbol on the steering wheel.

10. Tell me how you will determine if there is a malfunction in the anti-lock braking system (ABS)?

A malfunction of the anti-lock braking system (ABS) is indicated by the ABS indicator light on the dashboard. When the car’s ignition is turned on, all the warning lights come on, including the ABS, but after a few seconds the ABS light should go out, indicating that the system is working properly. If the other lights go out and the ABS light stays on, this indicates a system malfunction. If the anti-lock brake system is not working, the wheels will be locked during hard braking, and we will not feel the vibration of the brake pedal.

11. Tell me how you will check if the brake liquid level is sufficient.

This tank is located directly above the brake pedal (under the hood), the cap is marked with a special symbol. There are two types of tanks: transparent and opaque. In the transparent tank, the liquid level is easily checked by the MAX and MIN marks, between which the required liquid level must be. If the tank is not transparent, the cap has a gauge with MAX and MIN marks and you need to follow them. If the brake fluid level is insufficient, the warning light may come on.

12. Tell me how you will check if the turn signals are working.

To check the turn signals, turn on the ignition (turn the ignition key to turn on the indicator lights). When the turn lever is raised or lowered, the indicator lights will start to flash. Then get out of the car, go around it and check that all the turn signals are working. If the turn indicator on the panel flashes twice as fast as normal (on the side you turned to), it means that there is a malfunctioning turn signal in the front or rear.

13. Tell me how you will check if the brake light signals are working.

To check the brake lights, you will need a helper to depress the brake pedal and you will visually see if the lights come on. If a helper is not available, you can place a heavier object, such as a fire extinguisher, on the brake pedal to hold the pedal down. Can be checked by specular reflection. In the dark, it is possible to drive closer to the wall in reverse and observe through the rear view mirror whether the stop lights come on.

14. Tell me how you will check if the service brake is working.

If the brake system is working properly, the brake pedal should not be depressed more than halfway when the engine is started. If the pedal goes all the way down and it goes into a higher position every time you press it again, this indicates that there is a problem with the brake system, possibly due to air in the brake system.

15. Tell me how you will check if all the lights are working. Tell how you will check if the headlight level control is working?

After turning on the ignition of the car or starting the engine, turning on the light devices together with the lights on the devices

the corresponding indicator lights on the panel also light up. The front of the car must have daytime running lights, dipped or high beams. If equipped, the front fog lights must be on, at the back of the car – side lights, stop lights, reverse lights, rear fog lights, number plate lighting. A malfunctioning or burned-out headlight bulb is indicated by a warning light on the dashboard or checked by turning on the headlights and visually inspecting them while walking around the car before driving. The headlight level adjuster is usually located near the light control knob: you control it by moving up or down.

16. Tell me where you will look for information about recommended tire pressure.

You can find the recommended tire pressure by opening the vehicle’s fuel cap or on the driver’s door frame. The information label indicates the pressure to be maintained when the car is lightly loaded or when its maximum permissible load is reached.

17. Tell me how you will check the air pressure in your tires.

The initial inspection is done by visually walking around the car and checking all tires for wear.

A pressure gauge (manometer) is used for accurate assessment of air pressure. After unscrewing the tire valve cap to itself

an air pressure measuring device is inserted into the valve. You press it, hold it for a few seconds and release it. You will see the air pressure in the tire on the pressure gauge panel. There can also be a device for measuring the pressure of the tire valve. The pressure must be as specified by the car manufacturer.

18. Tell me how you will check whether the tread depth of your tires is sufficient for safe driving.

Tire tread depth is measured using a special tool or caliper. After inserting the end of the device into the groove of the tread, we will see its depth. Higher quality tires have tread depth indicators or embossed numbers to indicate the amount of tread remaining. According to them, we judge when the tire wears to a certain level. Tire tread depth should be at least 1.6 mm in summer and at least 3 mm in winter.

19. Tell me how you will check whether the overall condition of the tires is suitable for safe driving.

The condition of the tires can be assessed by visual inspection. Check whether the tire is flat, whether the tread wears evenly, whether there are no bumps, cracks, chips or other damage, foreign objects (eg stones, screws) embedded in the tire tread.

20. Tell me how you will check if the emergency light alarm is working.

After pressing the hazard warning switch and getting out, we will do a walk-around inspection to see if all the hazard warning lights are working. They must all flash at the same interval. The activated emergency light signaling will be informed by the simultaneous flashing control lights of both turns on the dashboard.
